Following World War II, it became more common to see veterans wearing their uniform trousers with their T-shirts as casual clothing. But it wasn’t until the 1950s when the t-shirt evolved as a stand-alone item. Popularity gained after icons such as Marlon Brando, and James Dean were seen on screen in white t-shirts as outer pieces, finally achieving current status. These t-shirts of the early-days were commonly made from cheap single cotton jersey, with a simple cut and sew construction and ribbed collar, making them easily accessible to produce for a mass consumer. The fit relaxed somewhat compared to its undergarment counterpart, as it was no longer necessary to fit snuggly beneath uniforms. Its versatility also lends itself as the ideal venue for a slogan and graphic tees, often used in military outfitting to depict a soldiers regiment.
